This brief called for me to go out and film a range of different materials from water to inks and fire to trees in order to build up a repertoire of footage I could then use to create interesting effects in After Effects. I used a lot of alpha and luma matting in combined clips, as well as a lot of colour correcting and through my testing came my theme.

I noticed as I was playing around with a few pieces I'd filmed that it reminded me of medical footage of lab testing or scans of the body. This, along with inspiration from my FYP whose theme is 'loss of a loved one', inspired my theme of struggling to breathe.

The different clips pull together the concept of drowning, disease, smoke and injury along with the mantra of 'just breathe' and the worrying outcome of 'I can't'.
These are some GIFs of some of the original, unedited footage that was used in the final piece.
Black india ink dripped onto pre-wetted watercolour paper.
Acrylic ink dropped into a clear jug of water.
Filmed footage of river water flowing between some rocks.
Green screen filmed footage of my hand.
